How the mulch calculator works
Map mode lets you search your address (or use your current location) and click around the edges of your mulched area on Google Maps satellite imagery. Square footage is calculated automatically from the polygon you draw. Adjust the depth slider (2 to 4 inches is typical, with 3 inches being the sweet spot for most beds) and the cubic yards needed updates instantly.
Traditional mode is for when you already know your dimensions. Enter the length and width of the area plus the depth you want in either feet or meters. The result shows in cubic yards.
How much mulch do I need?
Most flower beds and tree rings want 2 to 4 inches of mulch. Less than 2 inches will not reliably suppress weeds. More than 4 inches can suffocate roots and trap too much moisture against the soil.
As a rough guide, one cubic yard of mulch covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. For an exact answer with your specific area and depth, use the calculator above. For deeper info on mulch types, when to apply, and common mistakes, see the EcoMulch Mulch Guide.
Why use mulch?
A good mulch layer locks in soil moisture, suppresses weeds, buffers temperature swings, prevents erosion, and gives any landscape a finished look. Organic mulches like shredded bark, wood chips, pine straw, and compost also feed the soil as they slowly break down.
